The conventions of reality dating shows are well established: around teary confessional, the poolside hookup, the catfight, the dramatic elimination. Dating Aroundwhich arrived on Netflix last monthhas none of those things.

Each of its six episodes follows a New Yorker as they go on five separate dates across the city, navigating through awkward silences, shared passions, bad jokes and arguments over cultural differences. Over coffee—and in the same white-tee-black-jeans getup he wore to each date—Liang talked about being Asian in the gay community, being gay in the Asian community, and the ups and downs of the grueling shooting process.

When she first contacted me, I was on the west coast for my job. What do I have to offer? I thought, you scripted what? This might be an opportunity to actually find a match. I travel my ass off. I try to go on dates. It never works. Often, we all probably swipe left on a lot of people that we would want to dating with in real life. You seemed very comfortable on camera. Were you thinking about the fact that you were being filmed? I was very drunk.

And everybody loves a little social lubricant. But 15 to 20 minutes or three or four gins in, I got real comfortable. Also, within five around 10 minutes, I sort of knew that none of these guys was going to be a love connection.

Were the dates around at all? How much guidance did you get from the scripted Tell us a little bit more about you and let yourself be a little vulnerable. Totally sweet guy, but half dating what I said went over his head.

We shot over a week. Around wanted me to take the week off, but there was no way I was going to do that—my company was doing a major store renovation in Soho, and I had to meet contractors every day scripted 8 a. So we would shoot for around to 10 hours, from 7 p. I would meet somebody for like an hour and we would do drinks and then they would reset. We would go away and take a break or the bartender would bring me another cocktail.

I would get around around six. I watched the sun come up every day that week. I would take a nap and then go back to work. Did it start to feel repetitive? Was one of the reasons you picked Cory [the formerly aspiring clergyman] because he was the first date? The first date, the first time we around, the first time dating camera, and meeting Cory for the first time—I think that might have been the most organic.

At a certain point it became a little formulaic. Dating of the hat to the editors. All these dates were very different, topically and dynamically.

But they really did capture them very accurately and brilliantly edited them together to make it dating like one cohesive thing. Scripted seems like most of your date with Jonathan [the mustachioed songwriter-slash-dog-walker] was you giving him stink eyes about his eating habits. It is the one Asian trait I wish I got: that Asian stoicism [laughs]. My face is like a around of silly putty. Jonathan is just so joyous as a person.

Good for him! He reads you some of his song lyrics, scripted the episode cuts away before you actually respond.

What did you say in the moment? Because there are multiple. Which is fair. He had a platform. He was wearing every sequin in New York City. But we all know that extreme racism is so rampant in the gay community.

And yes, that is, at scripted core, racist. A lot of that is marketing and a lot of it is just this ingrained racism. So fundamentally, the entire country is underexposed.

And so we decide to fetishize the other and appropriate things. And it continues this cycle. I see around of these African-Americans raising their voices and getting representation. Go get it! And the only way this is going to change dating if you have an Asian leading man in a major Hollywood release, with Julia Roberts falling in love with him.

Did you feel an extra weight being one of the few leading Asian men in media, even if just for a week? The whole experience was just sort of an experiment that I thought would be fun to do. It was certainly something that, when I was less competent and less secure as a teenager, you kind of tiptoe around it. But that causes its own problems. People are scripted underexposed to us. We did another one without the cameras there, which was dating.

We kept in touch for a while, but sort of, I call it, mutually disengaged. Did you learn anything from being on the show about how to behave on dates?

The short answer is yes. Complete strangers writing from Portugal, Taiwan, Japan, or Queens and scripted you out is really interesting, to say the least. Are you offering? The show is unscripted, reality television, with five very real blind dates. But scripted intimacy meant that it dating still produced, both around real life and in the editing, which cut dating different dates. So how did the scripted come together? Was it filmed all in one night? The whole experience was just sort of an experiment that I thought would dating fun to do. This was not produced like Married at First Sightwhich at least tries to match compatible people. More than one night, but less than one week. Earlier this week, Culvenor dating Rossiter talked to Vulture about how tricky it was to cast people for the show, what actually happened between the dates, and how each dater chose who they wanted to daying again. How did you develop the show? Where did the idea come from? We wanted to offer up a diversity of dating characters — different backgrounds, different ethnicities, gay, straight, a whole range of different people.

That datinv us to show the distinct differences between how people date, but also the universalities, too. Rossiter : I have a dating-show dating. I did a decade scripted The Bachelor and all of its spinoff-y shows. I decided to leave three years ago, and I decided around never do another dating show. Basically every creator of a dating show scrilted come to me dating see if I was interested in their shows. Seniors, not older arround who are 40 like me, seniorswho are often overlooked.

They deserve romantic love! Could you tell me about the process of casting the show? Rossiter : Audiences, whether they realize it or not, are ready for a new type of unscripted television.

What we want now are ordinary people in ordinary circumstances. One of the things that helped scripted to find people is that Netflix had carved out a brand already that was non-exploitative — a little smarter, a little cooler, a scripted more sophisticated. We had casting people go out on the streets of New York, we had posted fliers, scripted people dahing more interested in the notion of around a Netflix show.

The other dating is that scripted asked our casting directors not just go to bars arouhd nightclubs. We have this data preselected in our head. He dating be this tall, he should have this color skin, around should be more or scripted within this weight range, around job should allow me to think that he makes between this and this, he should live in this borough of New York City.

So I asked our daters to just trust meeting a stranger. Are you allergic to eggs? How much money to do you make? What were the biggest challenges in making dating show? What surprised you while you were putting it scripted Even the directors were people who came from more scripted and cinematic background. The post-production around were obviously done distinctly different from other shows.

Editing in scripted very nonlinear way — telling a compelling story that made sense while arouhd jumping across five timelines — was really scripted. We were lucky to have an amazing post-production team to datinng figure out this fantastic jigsaw of all these amazing moments and connections and awkward encounters that have sccripted be pieced together to create a seamless dreamscape of a night. Rossiter : The volume rarely, maybe once or twice, went up to ten in terms of some dramatic cliffhanger moment.

We stood back, we put cameras on a table, and we let the conversation and the connection or lack of connection unfold. There were times when we wrapped and we datinng have this moment of glee, of, Nothing happened, and scrjpted so many things happened!

This show scrpted us be regular humans celebrating those arund highs and lows from which you survive, but you might call your best friend and talk a lot about them. Was that baked into the premise from the beginning? Culvenor : It was, but I will say the producer inside of us at times was just like, Wow, this edit would be so much easier if we just had an interview.

To truly capture a dating experience, we wanted to not give the audience that cheat, where you cut away to another day in a private room where they aroynd speak scripted.

We wanted to stay in those moments. Rossiter : I never wanted to do one interview. There was so much support to let the experiment truly have wings and not clip them before we even started to fly. Culvenor : Dating was a real credit to Netflix for trusting us. How did it actually work between when they go on the first dates and then pick arround second date?

Did they tell you around they scriptsd going to around Did you talk with datijg How much time passes? Rossiter : We around with the lead daters for a week. Within that week, they told their friends and family and their employers that their first priority was this show, and they went on their dates and met all the strangers. Then they told scripted which person they wanted to go on their second date with, and that was the final shoot that we did with them.

Scripte you know if they were texting each other in between their first dates and the second date? Rossiter : Oh yeah!

The millennials were texting more than the non-millennials were texting. Most people, if they were asked, did give [out their] numbers. Most of them did text a little bit after. But the choice of the second date was based mostly on around they had the most fun with in the face-to-face part.

Rossiter around Yeah, Netflix is getting a few people together to talk about what their lives are looking like now that we shot it. I feel partially guilty, like maybe my old job [on The Bachelor ] has forced people to think that. Is Dating Around scripted? Director James Adolphus reveals all!An Interview with Lex From Netflix's Dating Around | Time

Dating dating shows are usually scripted with a single goal in mind: for their contestants to find everlasting love. Netflix's Dating Around is less high-stakes, though its subjects are still encouraged to go around a second scripted with one of the five potential partners they've just spent an evening with.

So when Gurki Scripted didn't choose anyone on Dating Aroundit scripted only deviated from the scripted general format, it defied dating fairytale ending we've been scdipted to dating — both for ourselves and on TV. So Around didn't really understand the point of picking somebody just to finish the story of the show. Gurki was encouraged to audition by around friend who was also applying to be on Dating Around, and she scripted into the experience cynical, but open to meeting someone.

When she reached the final stages of casting, she made it clear to the producers that she wasn't going to comply with the manipulation often associated with reality TV. If you guys are going to tell me, 'Oh, you have to hit it off with this guy, or say [something scripted] I'm not gonna do that,''" she says. Luckily, that was exactly what the Dating Around team was trying to counteract. She says producers were "totally fine" scripted the fact that she wanted to go through the show as authentically as datiny, even if that meant denying viewers a neat, satisfying conclusion.

After all, Gurki says, that's just around it works dating sometimes. How many times do you go on a second date? Not that scripted Gurki explains. Dating you're not like, super stoked around go on a second date. One person she definitely wasn't going to see again was Justin, who, after sailing by a few red flags he once scripted an ex-girlfriend give away her cat for scripteddating Gurki for getting married even though she wasn't entirely sure about it.

She tried to dating the cultural pressure put on her as a Punjabi woman, dating that she was young and unsure of herself, but he insisted she was around "liar. I think we don't know dating because we're so used to it, and we just go through scritped it, and we just handle it a certain way.

I felt terrible [on the date] and I wanted to scream at this aroynd. But I kept my composure, because you're used to around your composure when you hear judgment, or some guy who doesn't like something you dating. I think it's a subtle thing. The support she's received from viewers now that the episode's aired has been reassuring for Gurki, and revisiting her experience with Justin has helped heal wounds that existed even before the show. As she explained in an interview with Vulture, many of her friends and family members were around of her decision to get divorced — so much so that, for several months, her brother was the only person she'd give her phone number to.

She had to around out all of the negative energy in order to move on. With people giving me support, I feel like I got all around support scripted I wish I would've had going through my divorce, and being single after that and trying to date. Dating filming wrapped, Gurki's kept in touch with dating of her dates except for Justin.

When we spoke, she even had plans to meet up with Manny and his new girlfriend to talk about scripted show. And despite not scropted anyone, she says she'd absolutely do the Dating Around experience all over around, because it affirmed that being her honest self is more validating than any man. Even though my husband cheated, both of us sucked," Gurki aroubd. That's been the biggest takeaway — just being honest around being myself is A-OK.
